The Debate Over Sustainable Packaging Options

In today’s world, where environmental concerns are at the forefront of global discussions, the packaging industry is experiencing substantial pressure to adopt more sustainable practices and criticism of their current methods. The choice of what packaging materials companies use can have a significant impact on the planet’s conservation levels. With increasing demands from the e-commerce market for packaging, there is no dispute that traditional plastic packaging is incredibly harmful to the environment.

Traditional materials like plastic, paper, cardboard, and glass have recently been dominating the market. While these materials serve their purpose, there is the question of whether there is something else that can be done. Perhaps there may be something better, as current packaging often comes with environmental drawbacks. Plastics, in particular, are a massive concern due to their slow degradation levels and tendency to pollute landfills and oceans. However, on the other hand, paper and glass are generally considered more biodegradable but their production process can still have notable environmental impacts such as energy consumption.

In response to the constantly emerging demand for sustainable solutions to come into play, a wide range of options have been presented. At the top of this list are recyclable materials like aluminum, glass, paper, and cardboard. Recycling reduces the demand for creating new packaging, which would conserve more energy and resources. However, this can only be possible with proper and effective sorting, collection, and distribution. Another method of sustainable packaging would be completely switching to reusable materials. Consumers could reduce their waste by opting for reusable bags, containers, and packaging. Options including shopping bags, reusable water bottles, and food containers can be chosen to be used multiple times.

Biodegradable plastics have also formed a new trend with the internet in its chokehold. Derived from resources such as cornstarch or sugarcane, these plastics offer a much more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional, everyday-use plastic in grocery stores. Although their performance and cost could change depending on the type, they can decompose in specific environmental conditions, allowing them to reduce their environmental impact. Novamont, for instance, is an Italian company specializing in the production of biodegradable as well as compostable bioplastics. Their materials are made out of plant-based starches, offering a wide range of products for the packaging industry so that it can commit to initiatives for complete sustainability.

The choice of which packaging a company uses heavily relies on its policies and depends on various factors like the target market, product characteristics, and environmental goals of the company. That being said, every option has its advantages and disadvantages.

While offering a more sustainable alternative, biodegradable plastics may not be suited for certain products, which puts them in tough competition against compostable materials. These packaging methods can help reduce landfill waste, but require proper composting and significant consumer awareness. Furthermore, while recycling and reusing materials can reduce the demand for new materials and recover waste, these options may face challenges with consumer adoption, efficient collection systems, and convenience.

One of the key points to keep in mind would be what is convenient to customers. While each user is different, control groups segregating and identifying consumers can assist companies in their attempt to choose their sustainable packaging. Ultimately, addressing the challenges of global warming and reducing our consumerism requires a collaborative effort from policymakers, consumers, retailers, and manufacturers. By investing in research and development, companies can promote recycling programs and encourage consumer awareness.
