[INFORMATIVE] Significance of Algae Presence in Freshwater
Significance of Algae Presence in Freshwater
By: Alexandros Theodossis
Lake algae are plant-like organisms that can be found in almost every body of water, more specifically, lakes. They range from microscopic species to larger forms that can be mistaken for plants. Algae that float on the surface of lakes and plant-like algae at the bottom play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems by producing oxygen through photosynthesis and serving as a food source for various marine organisms. Lakes in Florida typically contain vast amounts of algae coverage, causing various microorganisms to thrive in such ecosystems. More specifically, filamentous algae tend to exist in many lakes in Florida. This species of algae are colonies of microscopic plants that link together to form long visible chains, threads, or filaments. The intertwinement of filamentous algae forms a mat that resembles wet wool. This type of algae begins growing underneath the surface of the water. It usually floats to the top by mid-summer and traps gases under it, providing food sources for organisms.
Activity of Freshwater Lake Ecosystems in South Florida
South Florida provides a habitat to many lake organisms, including alligators, snapping turtles, alligator gar, catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, peacock bass, crappie, and Mayan cichlids. Such organisms require the optimal environmental conditions to survive. Largemouth bass prefer areas with plenty of vegetation, including algae and structures like fallen trees. In terms of their activity, they are active throughout the year but typically peak during the cooler months and are known for their aggressive feeding behavior. Peacock bass are found in warmer waters, often near rock areas and submerged structures, and are highly active during the warmer months. Additionally, they are known for their vibrant colors and strong fighting abilities, which provide an exciting challenge for fishermen. Bluegill is common in shallow waters with plenty of vegetation and is active throughout the year, with increased activity during the spring and early summer spawning season. Crappies prefer deeper, calmer waters with submerged structures. Catfish are found in a variety of habitats and typically seek calmer waters. One common theme among almost all fish is their tendency to thrive around vegetation in more excellent areas.
Why is Algae Coverage Important in Lakes?
Algae are important in lakes, not only in South Florida but also throughout other various ecosystems, because they provide coverage from the sun, feed fish, and provide vegetation for fish so they can thrive. Many fish require cooler waters with a vast amount of vegetation to thrive, and algae provide vegetation while acting as a cover from the sun, driving water temperatures down in lakes that feature vast amounts of algae coverage. It is evident that lakes that feature vast amounts of algae house a more biodiverse environment compared to lakes that do not feature any algae coverage. Additionally, algae perform photosynthesis, which produces oxygen as a byproduct. This oxygen is essential for the survival of fish and other aquatic organisms. Algae also serves as a major food source for many aquatic creatures, including zooplankton and small fish, which would mature into large fish as they feed on such plants. Furthermore, algae is proven to improve water quality. By absorbing nutrients and producing oxygen, algae help enhance water quality, stabilize sediments, reduce turbidity, and improve water clarity, making the lake appear more aesthetically pleasing.
